Dr. Fred Owens founded the Hearing School of the Southwest in 2002, and serves as the President of the Board. The Hearing School of the Southwest is the only school of its type in the Dallas-Fort Worth Metroplex, striving to provide expert educational, speech pathology, and audiological support to children with hearing impairment who have undergone cochlear implantation or have been fitted with hearing aids. The school is a non-profit institution, and represents one of Dr. Fred's lifelong dreams of helping to provide hearing to children stricken with hearing loss.
The founders, staff and supporters of The Hearing School of the Southwest are convicted by Helen Keller’s words that speech is the birthright of every child. We also believe that education is the birthright of every child. Speech combined with comprehensive early childhood education helps deaf children conquer their world of silence and opens a world of unlimited possibilities.
At the very heart of The Hearing School of the Southwest’s vision for deaf children and their families lies our fundamental belief in informed parent choice, empowering parents to access the very best services and support, and to ensure that their children attain their goals in life.
Operating in an active learning environment for children from 2 years to 6 years, the Hearing School of the Southwest is a private, oral school where children who are hard of hearing and profoundly deaf learn to listen and talk without the use of sign language.
